In the Body of the Story
A story should not be told plainly by the account and explanation of the characters or the narrator. It should be told in scenes where the character is being shown through the circumstances, obstacles, conflicts and resolutions he goes through.
Your characters should evolve through his actions and dialogue and not only through narration.
The essentials necessary for your conclusion should have been introduced before they are used in the finale. Demonstrate in the story what inspires or drives the characters into doing their actions and speaking their words. Drama is when the characters do remarkable things for good causes while Melodrama is when they do remarkable things for evil or absent causes.
The plot should progress into rising action by introducing increasingly serious predicaments for the characters. Suspense can be created by making uncertain solutions to the problem. The solutions should also correspond to the characters’ skill, talent or description in the story.
In the Conclusion
The conclusion of the story contains the climax when everything at stake is threatened to be lost. In the climax, something that has been understandable but unspoken and unpredictable in the beginning is finally revealed.
Throughout the story
It is true that we are the God of our own novel and things can happen the way we want them too. However, it would be more appealing for the readers if every detail is thought of by the author before they were put into the story such as the characters’ names, the hero’s disability or the color of the heroine’s clothes and so on. It gives more meaning to the reader and can actually give him a hint or idea on the attribute of the characters even before anything else is told about them.
FIGURES OF SPEECH
Using figures of speech does not only make your story sound better but it also enhances to the imagery that is shaped in the minds and senses of the readers.
STYLE, TONE AND POINT OF VIEW
All these components should have consistency throughout the story. Although there could be instances when there is a need to break the principles when there is a good reason to.
Know the conventions of the form you're working in, and break them only when you have a good reason to.
